Non DCC-friendly turnouts will still work, but there is an increased chance for shorts to occur. Check out Wiring for DCC to learn more. Basically, a DCC friendly turnout has the points at the same polarity as the associated stock rail.

This layout uses Kato Unitrack, but the firm doesn’t offer a DCC system. However, its DC plug-and-play control system is as close to foolproof as you could make it. If you’re using Unitrack but really not interested in DCC, go ahead and use Kato’s DC wiring system.
