Clarification on 87a Terminal of Relay
Clarification on 87a Terminal of Relay - I am installing a set of air horns on a truck and I would like to confirm a connection on the relay please. This air horn set comes with two compressors driving one trumpet each. The instructions are not very detailed, but the box does show a diagram which i

Changeover relay : Two circuits (terminals 87 and 87a ) have a common terminal (30). When the relay is at rest 87a is connected to 30, and when the relay is energised 87 becomes connected to 30 (but never both at the same time). Relay with double output . Terminal 87 is linked to pin number 87b, giving double outputs from the single NO contact.Change Over Relays For Automotive & Marine Use · Micro Relays

PDF fileNumbers of a Relay Looking at the diagram, we see the pinout of a typical 12V relay. Note that each pin is numbered. 85 and 86 are the coil pins while 30, 87, and 87a are the switch pins. 87 and 87a are the two contacts to which 30 will connect. If the coil is not activated, 30 will always be connected to 87a.

How-to-guides - Understanding relays
Understanding Relays. The relay is probably the most common electronic component that will resolve just about any electrical issue or complete any project you have. Understanding the relay will allow you to isolate a circuit to ruling the free world. Now let's just see how powerful the automotive relay can be!
Why Do Relays Use 30, 85, 86, 87, 87a?
They follow guidlines setup by an electrical standards guidelines. I can't remember the organization that standardized the numbers system specifically, but essentially, there is a guide that tells how the numbers are assigned based on funtion and timing (when it was proposed and approved) Something like how the NFL uses certain sets of numbers for certain positions.
What is pin 87A for?(relay) - Ignition and Electrical
Ok I think I may have answered my own question.. After staring at some more diagrams, I think that the reason there are two 87 pins(87 & 87A) is because 87 is set up for a circuit that is normally open(the contact rest on 87A) and 87A is set up for a circuit that is normally closed and when the cicuit/relay is energized it opens the contact.
